  Technical Information on Oil Paintings

This section contains information on oil paintings. Click here for instructions on framing and caring for a giclée print.

The oil paintings have been done using Winsor & Newton's Artisan line of oil paints and mediums. Each is an original work of art, starting with a blank canvas. The brand of canvas I prefer is Masterpiece Arts.

There is not a lot to do to care for your painting. Do not use cleaner or solvents (you can dust it). The safest place for your painting is on the wall. We recommend that you hang it out of direct sunlight and avoid areas where the painting will be exposed to moisture or heat.

I often sell pieces that are unframed but ready to hang. What this means is that the painting was done on a "gallery wrap" canvas. The sides wrap around the piece (there are no staples on the edges). The sides are then finished off with a coordinating acrylic paint. Each piece has a hanger on the back. You can frame the piece later, if you wish.

Please note that oil paintings should never be framed under glass—the paint needs to breathe.

The hanger could be picture wire, a sawtooth hanger or canvas hanger. Canvas hangers are removable, adjustable hangers that slide in between the canvas and the stretcher bar.

If the hanger becomes dislodged, just slide it back in.

If the piece is already framed, the framed price is also listed. If you want an alternate frame but don't want to deal with framing it, we can work together to select a frame, which we will fit for you.

I also have pieces that need a frame but have not yet been framed. In that case, you can either buy it unframed or contact me about framing it for you for an additional charge (we keep the framing prices as low as possible). If you want to frame it yourself, we can suggest some online shops that sell good quality frames at reasonable prices.

Take a little time deciding on where to hang your painting and try it out in different places. A large painting in too small a spot will look crowded and a smaller painting on a large (otherwise blank) wall will get swallowed up.

  Our Guarantee

We have made every effort to accurately represent the works of art on this site (and, in fact, we believe the paintings are much more vibrant than what can be represented on the website). We want you to be thrilled with your purchase. If you are not completely happy with the painting, you will be given a refund (less actual packing/shipping costs), provided the piece (and frame, if included) is in its original condition. We encourage you to spend a little time living with the piece before deciding to return it, but we would appreciate your notifying us within 30 days if you decide not to keep it.

Please contact me before returning a piece. Refunds (less shipping cost) are issued after the piece has been returned. The piece should be shipped back via Priority Mail, Insured, using the same packing materials if possible. If the piece is damaged during shipment, you will need to file the claim with the post office because you have the physical evidence of damage. You should specify the claim to go to you. If the piece is damaged during transit when returning a piece, I will file the insurance claim with the post office and specify for the claim check to be sent to you.

  Ownership Rights

Once you buy a piece, you are welcome to use a digital image of it within reason, such as on your personal website, or to resell it.

We reserve the right to use the image of the painting, including selling reproductions, inclusion on websites and other promotional materials, and to paint similar subjects. An artist and their heirs retain copyrights
