A stag (also known as a hart) emerges from the dawn mist in an enchanted woodland. This is a painting that slowly evolved. I started with a black and white forest landscape, done over a couple sessions, then covered with a thin copper wash. After that, I used misty greens and purples, with a glow coming from the distance. A spirit animal, in the form of a deer, seemed right for the piece. Finally, I used a little metallic gold to highlight the foliage for this unusual tonalism landscape. An original acrylic painting on a stretched canvas (the staple-free sides are painted), inspired by the Oregon woods. It has been varnished to protect the paint and preserve the lustrous colors.
